The Art of Loish: Behind the Scenes is the first art book by Lois van Baarle, an illustrator who works as a digital freelancer in Northen Europe. Since she had graduated from college in 2009, her work has bloomed on such sites as DeviantArt and has attracted a Facebook following of at least a million at last count.
In the book, Lois details out her growth as an artist from early beginnings to college and then as a professional digital illustrator.
In one of her chapters, Lois explained that even though she was a precocious artist growing up, she never thought that she could be a “real” artist in the traditional sense, and opted to originally to be an architect or interior designer.
What I really find the most enlightening is how she breaks down her sketching and painting processes from thumbnail rough sketches, to color studies all the way to photoshop post-color finishes. She also talks about her influences and how to get past creative blocks. She even has a tutorial to lead the reader through a beginning sketch all the way to a finished artwork.
As a digital artist, her eye-catching color rendering and line work are superb and I really love her style. The 152-page hardcover book is really well constructed with a solid binding, high-quality non-glossy paper and comes with a slipcase for storage.
